Warning Hard Drive Not Found
Warning Hard Drive Not Found Thats what I woke up to this morning. Not what I had in mind. My tech friend asked if I had my backup disks. Of course he would ask that. Of course, I have had them, kind of, but Im not sure where they are now. I honestly dont know if they would even work. Its not entirely my fault that I dont know where my backup disks are. You see, Im moving, and we thought our house would be under contract about four weeks ago. So we packed EVERYTHING. We almost even packed the toilet paper. Not really, but it feels that way. When I say we packed everything, I concede that is an exaggeration. Honestly, we only packed anything and everything that is useful. Weve had this conversation many times: Where is the __________? Its packed :( So, my backup disks are probably packed in some box that is somewhat well-labeled. To find them would mean carving out at least two hours of time to go through the piles and piles of boxes in my garage. Of course, this made me think about my career backup. When I got laid off, I had NO backup disks. I had no network connections, no one knew who I was, and I was not educated in or practiced with any networking and job search tactics and strategies. I was ill-prepared. Ive learned a lot in the last ten years. Its important to have that backup, ready to go. So, while my computer is writing new backup DVDs, Im thinking about what a career backup DVD would include. They would have to be things you can start doing now, and continue to work on over time. Every minute you spend on your career backup will help you have an easier, less-stressful job search. Unfortunately, the job search might start as abruptly as my morning did, when I saw the dreaded message hard drive not found. What would you say is important to add to your Career Backup DVD? 5 Unwritten Social Media Rules For Employees Before signing up on social networking sites, we all have to agree on the terms of agreement even when we dont read them. As employees, there are actually more social media rules that we need to follow if we do not want to mess up our careers. Its not written in a guidebook and certainly not in our work contract, but there are social media rules that every employee must follow if they do not want to make a fool of themselves when they come back to their workplace. It may be hard to believe that employers go to the trouble of researching about you online, but they do and they do it regularly. Dont worry, these rules dont impose on employees that they must always sing praises for their bosses nor do these rules force you to do something youre not comfortable doing. In fact, the unwritten social media rules are pretty basic but often go over your head in times of emotional rage or drunken stupor: 1. Do not post criticisms about your boss or your company online. When youre frustrated or angry about anything related to work, try to stay away from your computer. Do not open Facebook, do not log in to Twitter. Your emotions are running high and theres a 50% guarantee that youll say something that youll regret later. This is the worst thing you can do to get yourself in trouble. Its not just bad in the eyes of your present employers but in the eyes of future ones, too. Dont throw them under the bus just because youve been given a memo. Dont bash them personally just because they didnt like your work. Be a professional and take it in strides. Most of the things you learn and hear in the office should stay in the confines of the office. Its up to your judgment which information can be shared so be smart about it. 4. Do not devote time on useless online fighting. To put it simply, dont be a troll. Also, ignore the trolls. Dont waste your time arguing endlessly and pointlessly about nonsense. Intelligent online discourse is always welcome, but if it starts to point towards the direction of citing flaws on grammar and personality, its not so intelligent at all. Dont go for the fifth round, like what Guy Kawasaki said. If possible, dont even go for the first round. Feeding the trolls shows immaturity. If they attack you personally, its best to ignore or block them. 5. Do not post anything you dont want your boss to see. Basically, just dont post anything online that you know can get you in trouble. You must have the sense to discern whats acceptable for a professional to share online. Be as expressive as you can be, just make sure that youre not bulldozing over other people along the way. You can post those long essays of what you dont like about the government, just make sure it sounds rational and not just pure hatred. Dont hesitate to post candid shots of you with friends if its all innocent and not something that will make people feel awkward. And of course, make sure that what you post doesnt reflect badly on you and more importantly, on your company. Every employee is free to be active on social media. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to take months or years off work to be able to roam the world, so working in another location allows you to do so while still earning money. Plus moving elsewhere could open up better opportunities and allow you to further your career in a way you might not have been able to if you were staying at home. You will be relocating for work, but moving to another country will have a huge impact on the rest of your life too and so having some other reasons will help you decide if its the right decision. You will need to make sure each family member is settled and happy in the new country too. If your spouse is higher up in their career, are they able to find a job thats equally good when you move? If they just work general jobs, are they likely to find something that suits their skills? If not, can they work from home running a business, freelancing or blogging- or if it comes to it can you live on your salary alone? If youre moving with children, can you find good local schools that youd be happy to send them to? While you will be relocating or moving for your work, you, of course, need to ensure that everyone youre moving with is able to continue with work or their studies. If for example, theyre just getting off the ground, or maybe have had financial issues previously then it might be a reason to stop and think. You dont want to uproot your life for this cause, just for it to fail. If things are unsure but you want to take the plunge and go for it anyway, be sure you have a backup plan. A good sign that they are stable is that theyre committed to helping you during the move such as with relocation costs and finding somewhere new to live. If youre doing things differently and are looking for a job abroad before moving, you might need to spend a few weeks there, applying for positions and attending interviews. That way when you move, you have a job waiting and can find a home nearby, rather than moving and potentially being out of work for a while- or only being able to find something thats miles away from the place you have moved to. The United Nations reported that over 3% of the worlds population is now living and working abroad, and the numbers continue to grow. As finding a job in ones own country becomes more difficult due to the lack of work and rising competition for each post, its little wonder that finding work overseas has become quite fashionable. Chances are, you already know somebody within your family or friendship group that has already left your fair isles, and jetted off to another country to begin a new life, on a short-term or a lifelong basis. Pros and Cons About Working Overseas What Will You Do About Your Current Property? Before moving abroad, you will need to tie up all the loose ends at home- and your current property is one of them. If youre renting, you might be tied into a contract and so will have to wait for it to end. If youre selling, your house could be on the market for a little while. If you plan on renting out your property, you will need to speak to an estate agent to manage things on your behalf, since you wont be around. So getting rid of your current home, and any possessions that youre not going to keep will be a big job. Large items of furniture, vehicles and appliances will need to be sold. You could sell homewares and other furnishings on eBay, Facebook groups or boot fares. You could give away and donate other items that you no longer need. It often makes sense to sell things and buy new items once youve moved rather than pay expensive shipping costs to take things with you. Another thing to consider is your pets, if they will be coming with you, they might need to be put into quarantine for many months so getting this done as soon as possible is worthwhile. Once you have gotten rid of what you dont need, packed up and stored/ shipped what you do you could look for short-term accommodation until you move. This could be staying with friends, a hotel or a short term let on a monthly basis. Where Will You Live If youre relocating through your current company, you wont have any say about where you go. However, even if the country is set, you will still need to find somewhere within the destination. You will want a property thats close to your work, but if youre moving with a family, things like nearby schools and parks will need to be considered. You will want to check out things like crime rates and other statistics in different areas. If youre moving abroad to search for work then the world is your oyster. The middle east is a good one to consider, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are some of the fastest growing cities in the world, and both offer incredible opportunities for work, culture and history. You could think about Asia, places from China to Hong Kong to Indonesia to Japan will all be a huge change of culture and an incredible opportunity if youve grown up in the west. America is known as the land of opportunity , and as its such a huge country, it is massively diverse and you get very different experiences just from state to state. Europe is another continent to consider, if you move t a country like France, Germany or Spain, you could learn a new language by submerging yourself within it. In Europe, you, of course, have the United Kingdom and Ireland too with lots of exciting opportunities for work. Places like Dublin are experiencing a significant skills gap, so its the perfect opportunity to get yourself out there. Since many countries will require you to have certain skills or qualifications to work in them, you might be limited based on your current job.
